Portal (2007)

Portal (2007) for trombone solo is in four sections and was commissioned by Lauren Husting. I was asked to write a fanfare-like piece as an "appetizer" for her recital. In general, a fanfare is associated with the arrival of a dignitary and was historically performed by natural instruments. The use of tonally-based pitch materials and simple rhythm is a primary idea at the beginning of the opening section. Chromatic interval relationships are used to push away from a tonal key center. The second section is a variation of the first section with short rhythmic segments. As a contrast to the first and second sections, the third section is played with a mute (soft cloth), has a slower tempo, and a more flowing contour than the previous sections. Tonality is more ambiguous in this section. The first theme returns in the closing section of the work.
