Mons Montis (A Great Rock, 2005)

Mons Montis (2005) for multiple percussion solo with the accompaniment CD is commissioned by Percussionist, Peter J Saleh.  The title of the piece, Mons Montis, translates to ‘A Great Rock’, in Latin and was taken from the
name Peter itself. (The name translates to “Rock” based on the New Testament, Bible verse Mathew 16:18 “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church..”.)
The work is divided into five main sections: Introduction-A(Motive I)- B (Motive II)-C-A’-A”.  In the multiple percussion part, the two primary motives repeat with variation, especially  the first motive that continues to build dynamically by adding mallets as it approaches the end.  Sound samples of the original percussion instruments in
various states of manipulation are utilized in the accompaniment CD.  Also, other sound samples are manipulated by granular synthesis in MAX MSP, convolution in Sound Hack, stretching time, and pitch in Peak.
Peter J Saleh helped with the recording of the original percussion instruments. He also edited the accompaniment and solo parts.
